It’s time to announce the winner of our last Frill

CONGRATULATIONS LACEY WENZEL!!

*winner is determined using www.random.org*

Please e-mail your shipping address to info@redrockstudios.com and we’ll get your prize in the mail

This week’s Frill is a VERY exciting one!!! We have the most adorable toddler’s dress up for grabs:)This dress is seriously a perfect outfit for a little girl’s portrait session. The colors are amazing and the design is just pure fun! Perfect I tell ya! I can’t express how much I love this little dress.

This priceless item was handmade by Susan, owner of Prickly Pear Designs in Greenwood, MS.  If you have children, you absolutely must check out her etsy shop and become a fan of her Facebook page. She is so talented, making some of the most adorable children’s items I’ve ever seen!

My 4 year old daughter was gracious enough to model this dress for me, and she is a size 4T. I think it would easily fit a size 5T as well. I hope you enjoy the mini photo shoot of this fabulous dress as much as my little Whitney enjoyed being my model for the day… more like for the 10 minutes she permitted me to photograph her:)

Remember, there are still 3 ways you can enter win and they all count. The more you do, the better chances you have at winning! Best of luck to you all!

And for those of you who are seeing this for the first time, here is the story behind Friday Frills:

“For years now, my photography clients in Las Vegas will always ask me for advice in regards to what they should wear for their portrait sessions. I realized recently that there is one piece of advice that I never leave out… ACCESSORIZE!!

I personally love when my clients keep their clothing on the simple side, but throw in some flair with their accessories. Everything from necklaces to high heels can each add that little extra spark to your portraits! And since we are in Las Vegas, throwing in vibrant colors can be so fitting for your Las Vegas portraits. Or say with newborns, they always look uber cute when you throw on a fuzzy little hat or even a tutu.

Accessories are FUN and the options are endless. When you accessorize, you are adding a unique aspect to your portraits… you’re adding  personality. So I’ve decided to start a weekly giveaway in honor of accessorizing. That’s right… I’m giving away a free accessory each and every Friday:)Welcome to Friday Frills, sponsored by your favorite Las Vegas Photographers!”

Las Vegas Wedding Photographers – Craig and Rhianne

Craig and Rhianne’s Las Vegas destination wedding was perfect. Their closest friends and family flew to Las Vegas from across the country and celebrated with them all night long! And I was lucky enough to capture so many priceless moments from their day:)After their ceremony, we drove to several locations along the Las Vegas Strip and shot as many portraits as possible prior to their reception at the Legendary Stardust Suite. Speaking of the Stardust Suite, it is incredible! I had no idea that the Orleans Hotel had such a fabulous spot… it truly is worth checking out. The food was amazing, the view was to die for, and they even had a dance floor in the middle of the place. An absolutely perfect location for a small, intimate wedding reception:)I hope you enjoy a few of my favorite shots from their day in the gallery below. Thanx for stopping by, and enjoy!!

Mititelu Dumitru - Magnificent.
Delighted to see such photos. I do not advocate wedding photography. I’m playing around with wildlife.
Participate in photo contests.
Can I buy a 500mm lens.
I want to make photos like these at least qualitatively.
Light be with you.

Las Vegas Photographers – Overexposure tutorial

*this post was previously posted on my old “Tips and Tricks” blog. We are in the process of bringing all content to one place for easy reference, so I apologize if you have seen this before!*

Hey there fellow photogs, aspiring and pro!

I’m super stoked about sharing some tips and tricks I’ve learned over the years. In the end I’ll probably learn more from all of your contributions, but hey… I’m not complaining;)

Alright… down to business! My first very first Vlog on Overexposuring in portraiture:

*Special thanks to  Daniel Miller of SkyCastle Studio – the greatest up and coming Las Vegas Videographer;)

For those of you who enjoy reading (or can’t understand my mumbo jumbo on the video, lol), here is a written explanation about my Vlog tutorial:

Basically this tutorial is attempting to explain why I like to overexpose when I’m photographing people.

So first of all, here’s the situation:

  • You’re shooting a portrait of an individual (or possibly two or three people)
  • You’re shooting in the shade, mid day

The equipment I’m using in this tutorial:

  • Canon 5D (oh how I love thee!)
  • Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L lens
  • Handheld digital light meter (sekonic)
  • Silver reflector, and my husband (thanx babe!)

My goal:

  • A happy, close up shot of my 5 year old daughter
  • To draw attention directly to her eyes

Step 1 -

The first thing I do is set my ISO to 100. I choose this setting first because I want the highest quality image and I know that there is enough available light to pull it off. I also set my white balance to shade, because well… my subject is in the shade!

Step 2-

I choose my aperture. This is my second choice because I am shooting a human being, haha. My goal is to acheive maximum background and foreground blur in this portrait. The only thing I want in tack sharp focus is my subject’s eyes, not the nose or even the ears:) So my aperture of choice for this shot is f/2.8, as wide open as this lens is capable of.

Step 3 -

I choose my shutter. This number can vary, and I don’t really care what it is as long as it’s atleast 1/60 of a second. And honestly I prefer 1/125 or faster to avoid motion blur… the fact is that I can get excited while shooting which doesn’t make for the steadiest hand, lol. Plus, I’m shooting a toddler and they are notorious for rapid movement! The shutter is my last choice in this situation, and all I’m trying to avoid is motion blur.

* If there was not enough available light to shoot at 1/60 of a second, I would increase my ISO to 200 to fix the problem.

Alright, so how do I know what my shutter should be? I personally love using a hand-held light meter to get started. Using a hand held meter is more accurate than using the meter built into your camera, trust me on this one! And if you want to know why, just ask me (I don’t want to bore all of the non-techy photogs out there!) If you don’t have a handheld meter, use the meter built into your camera. It might work perfectly, or it might fail you a bit… just depends on the situation.

First I tell my light meter that I want to shoot this image at ISO 100 using an aperture of f/2.8. The ever so intelligent technology fills in the blank for me, and tells me that I should use a shutter speed of 1/500 of a second. So, I take the shot:

ISO 100
Aperture f/2.8
Shutter 1/500

So the light meter did an ok job, right? Well the exposure is right on… these things just don’t lie:) BUT I don’t personally care for it. I think it’s on the dark side and I would really like to draw more attention to the eyes. So my conclusion from experience is to overexpose by one stop. Since I don’t want to change my Aperture or ISO, I’ll let more light in through my shutter by slowing it down to 1/250 second.  And here’s the results:

ISO 100
Aperture f/2.8
Shutter 1/250

I don’t know about you… but I think it looks WAY better!

Well that’s it for today:)If you have any questions don’t be shy!

Brittany - Cool! I want one of those light things!!!

Molly Orr - Great tutorial! I still need to figure out how to use my camera. It is trial and error (mostly error) for me. This was so easy to understand, I can’t wait to play around. I do need to get a light meter though.

Thanks for sharing!

P.S. you are too adorable! LOL.

Taken out by the flu :’(

I’m finally seeing the light… the light at the end of our flu filled tunnel!!

I was the lucky one who somehow caught the flu first on Monday, and my entire family has been hit with it one by one this week. No fun!! And we’ve been so out of it that I just realized that today is Saturday and I didn’t post a Friday Frill giveaway. My biggest apologies to you all… this week has just not been good to me!

But don’t worry, I will have a new giveaway this coming Friday and it is extra amazing so stay tuned!! Trust me on this one… you won’t want to miss it:)
